FFXI gardening
Notes on gardening in Final Fantasy XI.
It's really easy to do. Buy a pot. Place it in your Mog House. Choose "Gardening" from your Mog house menu. Choose a pot, then choose "plant seeds". At least once every real-time day, use the gardening menu to examine your plant. If you don't do this, your plant will die. Eventually your moogle will tell you that the plant isn't doing well, and a "Feed crystal" option will appear in the menu. Feed the plant a crystal (crystal must be in your mog safe), then keep checking. Eventually it'll be ready to harvest. You must have at least 1 slot free in your mog safe to harvest. For larger yields, you might need 2 slots free.
Harvest type seems to depend on seeds, pot, crystal, and harvest day. I have a sneaky suspicion that crystal feeding day might matter, too, but I don't have enough data yet to be sure.
-- Also, be aware that some seeds have faster feeding and harvesting cycles than others, as grain seeds planted with veggie seeds will be dead by the time you get to feed a crystal to your veggies.

I was talking with one of the NPC students of Windurst's magic school (near the one who gives you some herb seeds and wants you to do his gardening homework for him). According to this student, the most important things in determining what you harvest are the crystal(s) used and the day the crystal was fed to the plant.
Does anyone know if this is true? So far, most of the gardening pages on the web (including this one) don't even bother recording the day the crystal(s) was fed to the plant. (Though in this page, Ceej mentions the possibility of it having an effect.)

Okay, I'm going to start paying attention to crystal feeding day. Watch this space for more info. And please feel free to post your own results!
Alas, I have cancelled my FFXI account as part of Project Free Time. It was huge fun, but I just couldn't have an MMORPG as part of my life any more. However, my friend Brian and his gang are still playing, and still growing plants.
I didn't log in for a couple weeks, and when I did all my plants had died. So I cancelled my account. Really, what did they expect?
