Some of my admirers call me “curt”. Others go so far as to say ‘nasty’. But who is the real David Stewart Zink?

A few simple beliefs inform most of my online responses:

  • I believe the humans are innately super-intelligent, and must learn stupidity.
  • Humans do, however, study and practice their stupidity until it reaches amazing levels.
  • Stupid thought is generally motivated, not random or arbitrary. Most stupid ‘reasoning’ is motivated by the desire to avoid appearing stupid.
  • When someone practices stupid ‘reasoning’ and reaches a stupid conclusion, by careful suasion and cajoling they can be led to see why some other conclusion is more reasonable—they will congratulate themselves on their intelligence and openmindedness in letting you persuade them.
  • However at the first opportunity they will reconsider the issue, succumb to the still extant motivations, and re-affirm their stupidity—they will congratulate themselves on their openmindedness and intelligence in rejecting your false ideas.
  • what stupid people need is rarely information or training in reason, it's psychotherapy: they need insight into their motivations, the understanding that stupidity sabotages their safety.

The key insight is that nature has long ago given up on selecting for intelligence: perhaps the opposite, since educated women are less likely to reproduce. While a certain number of people each year earn their Darwin Awards, for the most part it just doesn't matter.

  • an intelligent person is a person who reliably applies reason to reach justifiable conclusions.
  • a person practicing thought outside your observation will often be subject to emotional pressures, cajoling, etc. One wants to know if they are reliably intelligent when unobserved.
  • an person who needs to be cajoled into reaching an intelligent conclusion is not an intelligent person.
  • a person who is cajoled into reaching an intelligent conclusion is not known to be an intelligent person.
  • a person who cannot be cajoled away from reaching an intelligent conclusion is probably an intelligent person.
  • a person who cannot be driven away from from reaching an intelligent conclusion is probably an intelligent person.

How does the motivation not to appear stupid motivate stupidity?

  • an intelligent person makes a mistake, then corrects it as swiftly as possible.
  • a stupid person makes a mistake, then defends it for fear of appearing stupid.
  • an intelligent person takes a rational stand, then adheres to it even when mocked by monkeys (c.f. To Kill a Mockingbird).
  • a stupid person fears mockery, fearing it signals his stupidity.
  • an intelligent person may of course fear the mob, but this is usually easy to distinguish from stupidity.
  • a stupid person mocks, an intelligent person generally refutes.
  • mockery without exposing one's own positions is a way to avoid being caught out in stupidity.
  • an intelligent person argues. A stupid person argues Socratically.

And, of course: when their intelligence, wisdom, and insight are praised by the masses:

  • intelligent people reconsider their positions.
